Aaron Powell
Aaron is one of Tasmania’s busiest musicians and music teachers, regularly working as an accompanist, conductor, vocal coach and musical director. Aaron has been the musical director for the Tasmanian Premiere productions of The Phantom of the Opera (2013), Spamalot (2010) and Miss Saigon (2009) at the Theatre Royal for the Tasmanian Theatre Unit Trust, and has also conducted numerous shows for the G&S Society and the Hobart Repertory Theatre Society. In 2007 Aaron toured with local soprano Allison Farrow to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival performing a cabaret production, I’m a Stranger Here Myself, featuring the music of Kurt Weill to critical acclaim.
Most recently Aaron was musical director for Blue Cow’s production of The Events at the Moonah Arts Centre. In 2016 he was Musical Director and played keyboards for both John Xintavelonis’ production of Rock of Ages at the Theatre Royal in April 2016, and Old Nick’s production of Assassins at the Peacock Theatre in November 2016. Other major productions he has conducted include Jesus Christ Superstar (TTUT, 2015) Beauty and the Beast (G&S, 2008) and Sweeney Todd (SITE, 2007).
Aaron has also been musical director for the Theatre Royal’s 175th Anniversary Concert, the 2011 Hobart Carols by Candlelight, five Hobart Summer School productions and has worked on school productions for Hobart College, Elizabeth College, Rosny College, The Hutchins School, The Friends’ School and St Michael’s Collegiate where he is currently the Director of Music and Performance. Aaron was also the Musical Director for the Australian Rosny Children’s Choir between 2007 – 2009, during which time notable performances included the Hobart Myer reopening with Kate Ceberano, welcoming international cruise ships, and a two-week tour of Sydney and Adelaide working with local schools and the Australian Girls Choir.
In 2017 Aaron’s school choirs won all of their sections at the City of Hobart Eisteddfod, and picked up 7 of the special awards and trophies. The school's flagship ensemble, the Collegiate Singers, perform regularly at events such as the Opening of the Legal Year Service, the Parliamentary Prayer Breakfast, the Hobart ANZAC Day Service and many others. In 2016, the Collegiate Singers were invited to perform at the Port Arthur 20th Anniversary Commemoration Service which was broadcast live around Australia on ABC TV. Most recently they sang at the launch of the Hobart branch of the Alannah and Madeleine Foundation and led the Hobart service to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Charge of Beersheba.
Aaron is the founder and musical director of Young Voices of Hobart, a choral education program focused on providing a safe and inclusive space for young people to learn and sing.
